According to recent local news, the local watering hole the Meridian room has closed. While it was rumored that it was gone forever, Unfair Park reports that it will indeed return. But under new management. You see, as of today the Meridian Room officially has new owners. And you can plan to hit up your favorite Expo Park haunt again by Thanksgiving. Hurray!

Preseason basketball is here and it seems that at least one local establishment is decidedly unsatisfied with all the negative attention that Josh Howard has recieved as of late. Someone at SMU-area haunt Milo Butterfinger’s had some choice opinions about the recently infamous Mav.

Those familiar with what is perhaps the grooviest part of the city of Dallas are familiar with Matilda St., who along with McMillan serve as the preferred conduits for those inhabiting the Lower Greenville area. You can imagine this East Dallas native’s surprise when I went to visit my mom today and saw that both signs at the street’s intersection with Mercedes have been replaced with impostor “Mitilda” signs.

In the first three decades of the existence of the Dallas Cowboys — perhaps the greatest sports organization on the planet — only nine players and the revered head coach Tom Landry were inducted into the Ring of Honor at Texas Stadium. Only the words “Bob Lilly” and its accompanying “74″ have been there longer than the name of Don Meredith, beaming upon legions of Cowboy fans from its blue stripe just beneath the press box. And now SMU finally follows suit.

That’s right. Closed. Today two of my favorite Dallas businesses have gone the way of the Dodo like many things seem to be as of late. I can’t say that I did not see it coming with CD World. As for the esteemed Meridian Room, they have fallen victim to the benevolent arachnid the DART Rail, whose expansion can add this fine bar to a list that includes the Good Latimer Bridge and its sweet, sweet street art.

Dallas and New York based artist Tony Bones has made about as many enemies as he had fans with his years of prominent graffiti. Many have entered the debate as to whether his work actually qualifies as art. Tony’s luck has caught up with him in his home town, though and now he is forced to face the ugly consequences of his illegal activities. Fortunately for the artist, enough of an audience exists that a transition to galleries has become his main focus.

Success! Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki will represent his nation and carry the German flag for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. You know what else? he got a sweet new haircut to celebrate the whole affair.

Dallas and New York City-based artist Tony Bones will have a solo show beginning August 9, 2008 at Dallas’ The Public Trust gallery. Artists’ reception will begin that evening at 7 PM and the show will be running until September 6. Full details within.

Those of us in the good ole U.S. of A., especially in Dallas, have been lucky enough to see former MVP Dirk Nowitzki polish his exceptional hoops talent on our home turf. Now we all have a chance to show our gratitude for the big German. Looks like a guy named Tobias Gerhards has started a petition to get Dirk the job as the official flag bearer for Germany in this summer’s Olympics in Beijing.
